Our world is changing at almost breakneck speed. New and ever more complex technology; global climate change; accelerated pollution; the discovery of hundreds of new species of plants and animals; the extinction of hundreds more; the list involving change is endless and all around us.
At the same time, it is important that we not overlook the things that are not changing. Striving, enthusiasm, devotion and achievement still matter to this day even though these words were written by Roosevelt more than a century ago. Frankly, with all the change going on in the world, it is nice to know that certain things have stayed constant – no matter what some folks might try to tell you. Born exactly 165 years ago this month, TR (as he was referred to) stood as a shining beacon for precisely those words. He was a war hero, champion of the “Square Deal,” Nobel Peace Prize winner and consistently ranked by scholars as one of the greatest Presidents of all time. Yes indeed, these four words have stood strong for more than a hundred years – and they will still matter greatly another century from now. After all, the critics are nothing more than a dime a dozen! (maybe a nickel a dozen with inflation these days)!!
