The challenges related to a changing social and business landscape have been noted for literally centuries. Close to 300 years ago, Ben Franklin was quoted as saying “When you are finished changing you are finished.”
Speaking of change, as of 1945, world knowledge doubled every 25 years. By the 80’s it was doubling every 12 months. Current estimates suggest that world knowledge is now doubling every 12 hours! Additionally, by some estimates,, over the next twenty years, the speed of change is going to increase by 400%! So it is no wonder studies show that almost 80% of people, on a world-wide basis, report, that the “world is changing too quickly for me” and are overwhelmed. Yikes!
Studies show that only 38% of employees are willing to genuinely support organizational change and barely a quarter of them can actually help implement change. No surprise then that 70% of change initiatives fail.
And Charles Darwin, a scientist who was on the forefront of evolution theory, foreshadowed today’s era more than 150 years ago with “It is not the strongest of the species that survives; nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” There is no clearer message than that.
